Six Years, Countless Lessons: The Truth About the Self-Employment Rollercoaster

Six years ago, a photo popped up on my Facebook memories — me, all glammed up and clutching a Highly Commended Award for Red Shoes Media & Marketing at the South Holland Business Awards.

I remember that night vividly. I’d been self-employed for just over a year, full of ambition and absolutely certain that this was it – the start of something big.

And in many ways, it was. But not in the way I thought.

The Reality No One Warns You About

Self-employment isn’t a straight road lined with glitter and motivational quotes. It’s more like a scenic route full of potholes, detours, and the occasional emotional breakdown in a lay-by.

There have been moments where I’ve felt unstoppable – creating something from nothing, helping clients grow, feeling like I’d found my groove.
Then there’ve been others when I’ve doubted everything – when things didn’t land, plans fell apart, or I questioned whether I had it in me to keep going.

It’s messy. It’s unpredictable. And sometimes, it’s bloody hard.

But It’s Also Magic

Because somewhere between the highs and lows, I’ve learned more about myself than any course or coach could ever teach me.

I’ve learned that resilience isn’t just about “bouncing back” – it’s about bouncing differently.
I’ve learned that change isn’t failure – it’s evolution.
And I’ve learned that courage often shows up quietly – in the decision to try again, even when you’re scared stiff that it still might not work out.

Reinvention in Real Time

If you’ve followed my journey, you’ll know that I’ve reinvented myself (and my business) more times than I can count.
Each version of me thought this one would be “the one” – the perfect iteration.
But here’s the truth: there is no final version.

Growth, both personal and professional, is an ongoing experiment. Some ideas will soar. Others will flop. And every single one will teach you something.

So today, I’m not chasing perfection. I’m celebrating persistence – the kind that keeps you moving, learning, and evolving even when it’s uncomfortable.

If you’re on your own rollercoaster right now – whether you’re climbing a high or bracing for a dip – I see you. Keep going.
You’re not behind. You’re just building something real.
