The Courage to Change Course: Reinvention Isn’t Quitting

You know what’s really brave? Walking away from something that no longer fits you—even when it once did. Even when you built it yourself. Even when other people think you’re nuts for letting it go.

I know this because I’ve done it more than once. And I’m still here, evolving, growing, building something new. Not because I’m flaky, but because I’m finally learning to follow what feels aligned—even when it doesn’t make logical sense to anyone else.

My Story of Changing Course

Let me take you back.

I set up a newspaper once. Yep, an actual printed newspaper. Poured heart, soul, time and probably a few too many late-night takeaways into it. It was my thing. My baby. But there came a point when I knew deep down it was time to go. The spark had dimmed. I wanted more freedom, more space to shape my own path. So I left it behind and stepped into self-employment.

And that was just the beginning.

There was The Business Connection, a local women’s networking project I poured my heart into. Then ACTS Events – a playful little adventure with my sister where we planned themed adult parties (think Back to School, Halloween, Beach Party mayhem). Then came ikandoo, a business directory with real potential. FlorenceatNumber9 was my foray into the world of drop-ship homewares.

Each time, I went all in. And each time, I reached a point where I knew: this wasn’t it.

Not quite.

And so I changed course. Not because I couldn’t make it work. But because I was listening to that little voice that kept whispering, “You’re meant for something different.”

Some might look at that list and think, “She can’t stick to anything.”

But here’s what I know: I’m not a quitter. I’m a seeker. I’m a woman with the guts to say, “This no longer fits,” even after investing time, money, and heart. And I’m proud of that.

Each chapter taught me something. Each project was a breadcrumb leading me closer to the thing I couldn’t stop dreaming about.

The Nexus Collective.

This one feels different. It’s not just another idea. It’s a culmination. A calling. A bold, soul-led space where women like us — women with messy histories and massive hearts — get to show up, grow, and be witnessed

How to Know When It’s Time to Change Course

So how do you know when it’s time to let go?

Here are a few signs:

  • You feel heavy instead of energised. You dread the work. It drains you. It no longer lights you up.

  • You keep hitting resistance. The kind that doesn’t feel like “normal growing pains” but more like your soul quietly screaming, “Not this.”

  • You’re fantasising about something else. Not in a “grass is greener” way, but in a deep, soul-pull, “that would be so me” kind of way.

  • You keep getting nudges. Subtle ones at first, then louder. A podcast, a conversation, a random idea that won’t let go.

If you recognise yourself in any of those, you’re not crazy or flaky. You’re evolving. And evolution often requires letting go before you even fully understand what’s next.

How to Walk Away With Grace (And Grit)

Walking away from something you built is emotional. Here’s how to do it with intention:

Acknowledge what it gave you.

Nothing is wasted. Every project, job, or side hustle taught you something.

Close the loop.

Let people know (if it feels right). Archive the site. Wrap things up so you can move on without loose threads pulling at your energy.

Detach your identity from the outcome.

You are not your business. You are the one who creates.

Grieve if you need to.

Because yes, even leaving a business can feel like a breakup.

Celebrate your courage.

Seriously. Most people stay stuck in what they should do. You had the guts to choose what you need.

So What Comes Next?

This is the juicy bit. When you let go, you create space. And in that space, something new can emerge.

Not from panic or hustle, but from clarity.

Let yourself dream again. Explore. Journal. Take one tiny action in the direction of what feels good. Let the pull lead you, not the push.

That’s where the magic lives.

And if you want some structure to help you reconnect with yourself and reignite that spark?

Changing course isn’t failure. It’s feedback.

It’s self-leadership in action. It’s clarity gained through courage.

So if you’re reading this and feeling the nudge to pivot, to let something go, to try again – trust yourself. You’re not flaky. You’re evolving.

And evolution? That shit takes guts.
