What TikTok is Teaching Me About Reinvention

So there I was, scrolling TikTok for business inspiration… and next thing I know I’m full-on belting out Bon Jovi’s Livin’ on a Prayer like it’s 1987 again. 🎤

TikTok, it turns out, is part business tips, part 80s/90s nostalgia trip – and apparently part free karaoke app. But it’s also been teaching me a lot about reinvention.

Reinvention doesn’t have to be huge

For ages I thought “reinvention” meant some big, dramatic overhaul. You know – quit your job, move to Bali, launch the perfect new life. But the truth is, sometimes reinvention looks like doing one small thing you swore you’d never do.

For me, that’s showing up on TikTok. I avoided being seen for so long, but here I am, putting myself out there – unpolished, unscripted, sometimes even a bit silly.

And you know what? The sky hasn’t fallen in.

Stop overthinking, just do the thing

A few days ago, my old friend Taz Thornton (professional speaker, award-winning coach, and general force of nature) set a video challenge in her Facebook group. Normally I’d have spiralled into overthinking — what do I say? what if I look stupid? what if people laugh?

This time? I just did it. Pressed record, said my piece, posted.

And guess what… so far, no one has shot me down. In fact, it felt like a win just to put myself out there. Sometimes the biggest act of reinvention is pressing “post” and walking away before the fear kicks in.

Playfulness is part of growth

TikTok has reminded me that growth doesn’t have to be all serious strategies and spreadsheets. Lip-syncing to Bon Jovi, laughing at yourself, experimenting with something new – that’s the stuff that keeps reinvention fun instead of terrifying.

Reinvention isn’t about becoming someone else. It’s about giving yourself permission to show up differently, to play, to try, to risk.

And maybe, just maybe, to sing your heart out along the way.

Over to you

So yeah, TikTok might just be my new teacher – not just about content, but about what it means to try, to risk, to reinvent.

What’s one small, slightly scary thing you could try this week that might spark a little reinvention of your own?
