10 Lessons I Learned While Writing The Courage to Begin

by Feb 1, 2025The View from the Nexus

Writing The Courage to Begin: A Midlife Woman’s Guide to Reinvention has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. Not only did it allow me to share my passion for empowering women in midlife, but it also taught me lessons that I hadn’t expected to learn along the way. Here are ten lessons I discovered while crafting this book:

1. Vulnerability is Strength

Sharing personal stories and insights required me to open up in ways I hadn’t anticipated. Vulnerability can feel uncomfortable, but it’s also what connects us to others. Through this process, I realised that being honest about struggles and triumphs is one of the most empowering things we can do.

2. Progress is More Important Than Perfection

At the start, I wanted every sentence to be perfect, which only slowed me down. Over time, I learned to focus on progress instead of perfection. Some of the most impactful sections came from moments where I just let the words flow without overthinking.

3. Consistency Creates Momentum

Writing a book is a marathon, not a sprint. I learned to carve out consistent blocks of time to write, even if it was just 30 minutes a day. Small, steady progress is what kept me moving forward, even when the finish line felt far away.

4. Self-Doubt is Part of the Process

There were moments when I wondered if I had anything valuable to say. But I reminded myself that my experiences and insights could make a difference to someone else. Doubt didn’t disappear entirely, but I learned to push through it.

5. Inspiration Strikes When You Least Expect It

Some of the best ideas came to me during everyday moments – while walking the dog, cooking dinner, or drifting off to sleep. I learned to keep a notebook handy so I wouldn’t lose those fleeting sparks of inspiration.

6. Collaboration is Invaluable

Though writing is often solitary, I found that seeking feedback from others was crucial. Input from trusted friends and early readers, particularly my mum and sister, helped me refine the book and see things from new perspectives.

7. Writing Forces You to Clarify Your Thoughts

The process of writing about reinvention forced me to dig deep and clarify what I truly believe about growth, ambition, and midlife transformation. It was a journey of self-discovery as much as it was about sharing ideas with others.

8. Your Story Matters

At times, I questioned whether my experiences were worth sharing. But through the process, I realised that every story has value. Your voice and your journey can inspire others in ways you might not even imagine.

9. Taking Breaks is Necessary

There were days when the words just wouldn’t come, and I’d feel frustrated. I learned that stepping away, even for a short walk or a day off, often brought fresh energy and clarity when I returned to the page.

10. The Courage to Begin is the Hardest Part

Fittingly, the biggest lesson was the same as the book’s title. Starting something new is often the hardest step, but once you take that leap, the path unfolds before you. This is true not just for writing, but for any reinvention or transformation.

Writing this book wasn’t always easy, but it was deeply rewarding. My hope is that The Courage to Begin will inspire other women to embrace their own reinvention journeys. If I’ve learned anything, it’s that we all have the power to begin again and create meaningful change in our lives.
